HTML Symbols

Write a temperature of 30 degrees Celsius using a character reference.

Understand the topic

Symbols can be written directly as Unicode characters or through numeric and named character references. The correct choice depends on encoding, readability, and available fonts. A symbol alone may be unclear to readers or assistive technology, so pair it with words when it communicates an action, quantity, or status. Technical notation may need more structure than a decorative symbol.

Worked example

Temperature: 28 °C

Price: €12

Approved: ✓ application accepted

The degree, euro, and check symbols each have surrounding context. The status does not rely on a check mark alone.

Practice

Write a temperature of 30 degrees Celsius using a character reference.

Show a suggested answer

30 °C

Common mistake

Do not assume every font contains every Unicode character. Check the actual rendered text on your target devices.
